Overview

Klavier-Festival Ruhr is widely regarded as the most important piano festival in the world and one of the defining cultural events of Germany’s Ruhr region. Since its founding in 1988, the festival has transformed the former industrial heartland into a stage for pianistic excellence, presenting sixty to seventy concerts each season with outstanding artists from many nations. The organizer is Stiftung Klavier-Festival Ruhr under the artistic leadership of Franz Xaver Ohnesorg.

What distinguishes the festival is its combination of scale and intimacy. Over the course of three months, internationally known pianists and highly promising newcomers perform daily in venues that range from grand concert halls to former industrial sites and moated castles. The festival hosts about 60,000 visitors yearly and organizes around 80 concerts, with a budget supported by the Initiativkreis Ruhr, main sponsor Duisport, and a network of more than 69 sponsors and patrons including a highly successful international circle of co-founders and Jubilee Circle Campaign.

The programme encompasses classical masterpieces, contemporary works, jazz, and innovative educational projects. Described by FonoForum as the most important piano festival in the world, Klavier-Festival Ruhr does not adhere strictly to the geographical boundaries of the Ruhr, but also makes guest appearances in Wuppertal, Düsseldorf, and Rheda-Wiedenbrück, making it a true festival of the entire region.

Focus On Discovery: Each season presents festival debuts by young artists, documented in the acclaimed Edition Klavier-Festival Ruhr live recordings. The festival deliberately balances newcomers with established stars.

Educational Mission: The festival includes extensive educational projects made possible by its sponsors, reaching young audiences and supporting emerging artists through masterclasses, workshops, and community events.

Industrial Heritage Reimagined: Performing in halls that once powered German industry gives the festival a unique atmosphere where culture has revived a former industrial stronghold, offering audiences both musical and architectural discovery.

Event Experience

Daily Piano Immersion: For three months, audiences can attend concerts almost every day, moving between cities and experiencing different pianos, acoustics, and curatorial approaches within one festival pass.

From Monumental To Intimate: An evening might begin in the 1500-seat Konzerthaus Dortmund for a concerto, followed the next day by a recital in the intimate Kulturzentrum August Everding in Bottrop or a late-night improvisation at PACT Zollverein Hall 5.

Industrial Cathedrals: The Zollverein World Heritage Site, Jahrhunderthalle Bochum, and Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord provide dramatic backdrops where industrial architecture meets refined pianism, with lighting and sound design that respect the heritage.

Curated Listening: Many venues offer pre-concert introductions and artist talks. The festival’s booklet and digital notes provide context on repertoire, including thematic focuses such as French music in 2018 and portrait cycles.

Community Atmosphere: Despite its international profile, the festival retains a personal atmosphere with short distances between venues in the Ruhr, allowing musicians and audiences to meet in foyers, museum cafés, and park walks.

Event History

Klavier-Festival Ruhr was founded in July 1988 as an initiative to bring world-class piano music to the Ruhr region during its structural transformation from industrial production to culture and services. Under the continuous artistic direction of Franz Xaver Ohnesorg, it has grown from a regional series into an internationally recognized institution.

Early editions focused on presenting both newcomers and well-known artists in a limited number of halls. Over time, the festival expanded its geographical reach and venue diversity, deliberately including unconventional locations such as former collieries and industrial halls to reflect the region’s identity.

The festival has always been supported by locally based industrial companies, with the Initiativkreis Ruhr as general sponsor and a growing circle of sponsors. In 2011, an international circle of co-founders laid a further financial basis for the Ruhr Piano Festival Foundation, expanded by a successful fundraising campaign. In the jubilee year 2018, which marked the 30th anniversary, a third fundraising initiative, the Jubilee Circle Campaign, was launched.

Artistic focuses have varied, with 2018 dedicated to French music. The festival’s live recording series Edition Klavier-Festival Ruhr documents debuts and portrait concerts, creating an archive of pianistic development. Pianists such as Alice Sara Ott, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Fazıl Say, Hélène Grimaud, Pierre-Laurent Aimard, and Lang Lang have been presented alongside emerging talents who later became international stars.

Today, the festival is recognized as a model for cultural conversion, attracting about 60,000 visitors yearly and maintaining a yearly budget of roughly one million Euro, while continuing to invite over 100 artists to perform in more than 20 venues.

Getting to the Event

By Train: The Ruhr region has one of Germany’s densest rail networks. Essen Hauptbahnhof, Dortmund Hauptbahnhof, and Duisburg Hauptbahnhof are ICE and IC hubs with direct connections to Frankfurt Airport, Berlin, and Cologne. Regional trains and S-Bahn lines connect smaller festival cities such as Herten, Bottrop, and Hagen.

By Air: Düsseldorf International Airport and Dortmund Airport offer close access. Frankfurt Airport provides extensive international connections with direct ICE trains to Essen and Dortmund in under two hours.

By Car: The Ruhr is crossed by Autobahns A40, A42, and A1. Venues such as Zollverein and Landschaftspark have dedicated parking. For city-center halls like Philharmonie Essen and Konzerthaus Dortmund, use Parkhäuser and public transport for the last leg.

Local Transport: All festival venues are integrated into VRR and WestfalenTarif networks. A single entrance ticket for ExtraSchicht concerts is valid for all shuttle lines and public transport in VRR and WestfalenTarif Ruhr-Lippe. Day tickets and festival shuttles are often provided during peak weekends.

Accessibility: Major halls such as Philharmonie Essen, Konzerthaus Dortmund, and Tonhalle Düsseldorf offer accessible seating and entrances. Contact the organizer in advance for specific requirements at castle and industrial venues.

Where to Stay Nearby

Essen – Base For Zollverein And Philharmonie: Hotels around Huyssenallee and the city center such as Sheraton Essen, Hotel Essener Hof, and boutique hotels near Rüttenscheid provide walking distance to Philharmonie and short transit to Zollverein World Heritage Site.

Tips Before You Go

Use The Vielbucher-Abo: If you plan to attend more than three concerts during the season, purchase the frequent-buyer subscription first to receive 10 percent discount on all subsequent bookings.

Plan Cross-City Travel: The festival’s strength is its regional spread. Group concerts by city to minimize travel, but leave time for S-Bahn connections between Essen, Dortmund, and Duisburg.

Check Venue Character: Industrial venues such as Zollverein Hall 5 and Jahrhunderthalle can be cooler and have different acoustics than traditional halls. Bring a layer and arrive early to explore the site.

Combine Classical And Jazz: One of the festival’s unique features is the juxtaposition of classical and jazz piano. Mixing a classical recital with a jazz night offers a fuller picture of piano culture.

Book Castle Concerts Early: Intimate venues such as Schloss Herten have limited capacity and sell out quickly, especially for debut artists documented in the Edition Klavier-Festival Ruhr series.

Transport Ticket: For ExtraSchicht and other special nights, keep your concert ticket for free public transport within VRR and WestfalenTarif.
