JazzBaltica Festival 2027 – Timmendorfer Strand, Germany
Overview
JazzBaltica is one of Germany’s most distinctive jazz festivals and a noted event on the yearly European jazz calendar. Held directly on the Baltic Sea coast, the festival brings together world-class artists and adventurous newcomers in an intimate setting where visitors have unusually close access to musicians. What began as a palace festival near Kiel has evolved into a beloved seaside gathering in Timmendorfer Strand and Niendorf, attracting around 19,000 visitors in recent editions.
Since 2002, JazzBaltica has been conducted as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, organized by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Foundation. The festival is praised for its distinctive fusion of music and atmosphere, combining ticketed main stage concerts with free midday concerts by young local musicians and late-night sets. Its artistic direction under Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren has focused the programme on musicians from Northern Germany, Scandinavia, and the Baltic countries, while still welcoming global voices from bebop to contemporary jazz and world music.
The festival ground is built around the Strandpark, lined with ancient trees, and extends to the beach itself. Visitors move between carefully curated stages, each with its own character, from grand concert halls to an exclusive late-night series directly on the sand. The result is a weekend where dialogue between cultures becomes music.

What Makes This Event Special
Intimacy With Unusually Close Artist Access: What makes this festival unique is its relatively small concert venues, which limit daily attendance to several thousand. This creates close-up encounters where audiences and artists share the same promenades, harbor cafés, and park paths.
Baltic-Scandinavian Focus With Global Reach: The programme concentrates on music from Northern Germany, Scandinavia, and the Baltic countries, while inviting leading voices from around the world. Artists who have played include Wolfgang Dauner, Marcin Wasilewski, Kate McGarry, Nils Landgren, Gwilym Simcock, Chucho Valdes, Omara Portuondo, and Bebo Valdes.
Curated Multi-Stage Experience: The festival is designed as a journey through sound worlds. The Maritim MainStage showcases full artistic diversity, the rotunda of the Trinkkurhalle transforms into a vibrant JazzCafé, the open-air stage beside the historic building platforms emerging talents, the Strandpark invites pause and unwind, the 73Bar at the Maritim Seehotel hosts the lively JazzClub, and the exclusive @the beach series creates special late-night musical moments right on the water.
From Warmup To Avslut Ritual: The weekend is framed by community rituals. The traditional warmup brings together Nils Landgren with the big band of the Ostsee-Gymnasium Timmendorfer Strand on Timmendorfer Platz, while the late Sunday avslut concert unites Landgren and friends for a thrilling burst of jazz energy.
Free And Participatory Formats: Besides ticketed concerts, there are free midday concerts by young regional musicians, open-air concerts beside the Baltic Sea, and maritime flair of Niendorf harbor, making top-level jazz accessible to all.
Family And Next Generation: A special highlight is the family concert combining the JazzBaltica Ensemble with storytelling by renowned actors, inviting older and younger listeners to a shared experience and continuing the festival’s educational mission.

Event History
Jazz Baltica was started in 1990 by founder Rainer Haarmann. Up until 2011, it was held every summer in Schloss Salzau Palace near Kiel and the coast of the Baltic Sea. The palace setting provided a rural, intimate atmosphere that defined the festival’s early identity.
In 2009, the festival was directed by Bengt-Arne Wallin. In 2012, Swedish trombonist Nils Landgren took over as artistic director and moved the festival to the Evers-Werft shipyard at the harbor of Niendorf, a Baltic Sea resort near Lübeck. The move brought a maritime industrial character while preserving intimacy through relatively small venues.
Since 2002, Jazz Baltica has been conducted as part of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, one of Europe’s major classical and jazz festival families. Until 2011, founder Rainer Haarmann was musical director for most years. The festival typically takes place around the last weekend of June.
Attendance has grown steadily, with approximately 19,000 visitors celebrating the 29th edition in Timmendorfer Strand, 2000 more than the previous year. The 2021 edition adapted to new locations such as Strandpark MainStage with duo seats between trees due to circumstances, and has since established the park as central stage.
The festival’s artistic profile has shifted to feature primarily musicians from Northern Germany, Scandinavia, and Baltic countries, while still inviting global Latin and American artists such as Chucho Valdes, Omara Portuondo, Bebo Valdes, Monty Alexander, and Roy Hargrove. The JazzBaltica Ensemble with changing lineup has become an integral part, documenting regional collaboration.
